Show Intro:
I believe that one of the most amazing things about music is the ability to interpret the song as your mind sees fit as your brain seeks logic and common ground it begins to shape the main subject you project as the meaning. In a industry more concerned about telling you how much bigger there dick is then yours in a orgy of spinning rim jobs
Everyone has one. You know that band or song you totally get, but everyone else thinks your lame for liking it. So you tell no one.
It's your little secret.
Well the secret's out, here are ten bands you hate but I like.
Blink 182 - old and new. Yeah that's right. Self title is actually one of my favorites. I think "All the small things" really did a disservice to this band. Not everyone got that it was a joke. With emotional lyrics of childhood experiences and Travis Barker's god-like drum skills, this band's an underrated classic and should not be on this list.
Eiffel 65- While I never listened to them before or after, there was a period of time when I listened to their album. I particularly like their song about the P>L>A>Y>S>T>A>T>I>O>N>. They even list off a few of my favorite games like res evil and metal gear solid.
David Allen Coe- Crude, lude, racist humor. A lot of people can't stomach Coe and for good reason. Drawing his comedy from a simpler and definitely more Southern flavor. I think it amuses me because of how blatenly obscene it is. like i had to hear it to be leave it.
Gwar - Killing babies, cannibalism, and the sexacutioner. Need I say more?
AFI- Quite possibly the band that started the vamp craze, I still enjoy the noir-style lyrics and metaphors of the children of the night. Their songs are as if there was a love story musical about vampires.
Brotha Lynch - The father of horror-core genre ( yeah wiki said so). this is another one i listened to just to hear the crazy s@#% he'd come up with. Warning explicit lyrics!
Stabbing Westward - This band was my " Cure". I bought all their cd's at the time ('01) from some
kid at my school for ten bucks all together and listened to them repeatedly after losing my first girlfriend. What, after the two weeks it just felt like it was going to be forever MAGY!:)
Michael Jackson- Another one that shouldn't be on this list. Unfortunately his presence off the stage is what lands him on here. I always get a couple of weird looks if I mention liking Mike. Let's not forget he is the king.
Hollywood Undead- A band that could be easily confused with ICP. I feel like these guys are almost something good. Some of the rappers really are phenomenal, but the singing and other lyrics bring them back down a notch.
So there’s this video game Portal and not only is it a Perfect game but….
What….
I’m not saying it….
NO it’s a cliche and I have standers good sir
OK how about this ill just say the Cake is a Dark S 7 Maneuver
And if you got that reference congrats you’re as big a loser as I am!
All jokes aside, Portal IS one of the BEST GAMES in recent years! That’s right you heard me. Humor at perfect pitch, controls like the trident of Poseidon controlling the seas themselves, and one of the most compelling diabolically logical psychotic villains ever glad-us. You think the repetitive bosses from bio-shock or the ending to Half life was “challenging” then you’ll flip your shit with this crazy bitch. She’s not bad she’s not good she just is.
And that’s scary as hell.
Oh and she likes science…
AAAAAAALOT!
shes just a little to excited to see you in peril. In fact, she loves science so much she sings about it.
Make sure when you hear the song you have a extra pair of ball huggers handy because you will reach full release at this moment. (gross I know) Like a gift for complete the science “tests”.
Fever Tangent:
Remember when games would reword you for completing it. SMB gave you a more challenging version of the whole game with easier enemies swopped out for harder enemies. Or silent hills multiple endings depending if you played more conservatively with your supplies. Now adays you get Mass Effect 3 with multiple conclusions so minutely different (SERIUSLY THE DIFFERENCE IN SOME IS SIMPLY A SWOPPED COOL/WARM EFFECT TO THE COLORS) they had to develop a prolog to black hole of plot holes and the sheer outrage of the fans, reluctantly given away a better prologe for no charge. Now adays if you qwant a reward you have to pay atleast 10 bucks for some dlc you know was in the code of the game and on the disk.
But I digress
.
After battling and defeating glad us she sings a remorseful and superficial acceptence
Hate, Love,
Regret, Betrayal,
Logic, Emotion,
Realization, Psychosis,
Tragedy, triumph.
It’s all here rapped into a dark humorous yet saddening song burrito.
Jonathan Coulton the writer and performer of the song is also know from his code monkey song depicting the people who punch out line after line of code for gaming as simple people Frito’s and mountain due. Also for Want You Gone” the Sequel Portal 2’s credit them. Now you’d think the first time it was a great game with a great song but can they do it twice. Well hell yeah they can were talking valve here. Their take are sweet ass time make you drool in anticipation and release it when it’s ready (HALF LIFE PART 3 PLEASE….NOW!!)
I put the links to both Still Alive and Want You Gone But I recommend beating the game and hearing it as I did. A reward for your hard work for Science! oh and this last ones a remix i made of Still Alive. Enjoy!

Has this ever happened to you? You're hanging out at the 5 & Diner, enjoying the atmosphere along with the seemingly cuddly music about a girl in a poodle skirt meets Johnny 'leather jacket' McMotorcycle, then BAM! He’s a fuckin' red stain on the pavement. His girlfriend left alone to cry with her three friends who sing doo wop for dramatic effect
technically these songs span from the 40s to the 60s. There are quite enough songs that cover this subject matter from that era to have its own sub-genre. It seems completely out of place to the time. How was something so morbid allowed in an era that thought a belly button was to skanky for TV? ('I Dream of Genie's naval)
Want to know what I think? This is purely a theory, but I could see it being some kind of PSA propaganda for teens and the dangers of driving or dating while young, much in the way of 'Reefer Madness' and potheads' dangerous attraction to open windows.
It goes like this.
Mac: Kids are stupid and we don’t want them doing stupid things
Johnny: Well tell them not to cause it's stupid
Mac: Can't. They're too stupid
Johnny: Well they scare like everyone else, just tell them it will kill them.
Mac: Right, but it wont. What if they figure out it’s a lie?
Johnny: They wont they're too stupid. Now light me up a cigarette Johnny! Gotta go maintain my health.
(Yes for your information everyone WAS named Johnny or Mac in the 50s and in black and white)
So all you crazy guys and dolls out there in propaganda-land, smoke some some weed, smoke some with your girlfriend, drive carelessly while having unprotected sex
and relax. Just don’t smoke cigarettes I hear that will kill you.
DISCLAIMER: I use a particular word in this blog that some might find offencive. Please understand that im using it in the context of the song meaning strange. this is not to say that homosexuality is strange but as a child it was seen as degradding to be called it. i would never belittle someone for there sexual oreintation. I was called it many times when i was younger completely understand the weight of said word.
also im not jon davis or korn this is all therey and speculation in my constently humming brain. i like korn from self tittled to issues. i will do a propper restrospect.ok with that lets begin.
My first CD (people still remember CD’s right?) was a Korn album. In fact, it was their debut self-titled album. I remember as a kid listening to it constantly, and at that time, as narrow of an understanding I had on music, I idolized it as pure awesome.
My home life at the time was radically changin and there was a lot of turmoil. I’m not saying that I had it rough but just felt to me very chaotic. Read my other post the tide of growing mind if you want to know more about my childhood. I was also changing schools frequently, making it nearly impossible to make friends. I felt a connection korns sound. the feelings of the ostracization and strength in anger the fear of loneliness. I was a "faggot" surrounded by judgmental bullies conforming to picking on the loner. I do still stand by the album as a decent album, although I don’t feel it relates to me today. i did buy all up till issues which i actually think is a great cd maybe there best but thats an opinion like most of this
Since then I've changed and so has Korn in concept and bandmates. While I think there has been a sprinkling of decent songs, for the most part they fell short for me. The singing has lost its unique sound in what seems like an attempt from Jon Davis to prove to the world he's a “good” singer. The sound has lost all semblance of its life-crushing shame turning to uninhibited hate, turning to a sound that is either trying to preach pseudo-science or explain how much better Jonathan Davis is than us. If Jonathan Davis got over his issues that would be awesome, but he essentially “bullies” people through his words. "Oildale" off their more recent album, to me, seems like a direct response to his critics and is a good example of this 'you suck. I'm the best, so fuck off' attitude.
“you're such a piece of shit, Nothin but heretic, sucking the life out of me. Fucking your gone without me”
i realize this is notable in all albums but when i was listening it felt more like servival now it just seams arrogant and frankly alot like bullying.
Fever tangent!!!: leave me alone! go away! get away! you just go away! its going away! LEAVE ME THE FUCK ALONE! we get it jon you dont like crowds. one of these fraises should be one all there posters its one of many brain bashing cleches in Korns music. i figure theres an ally cat living in there recording studio that likes to rest on the sound board and everytime jon sees it hes all "get the FUCK AWAY from me CAAAAT!!!!"
Oh and don’t even get me started talking about the Skrillex/Korn attempt to make the sound of a Fucking ban saw left on, a music genre called dub step. We all know what the 'dub' stands for in that ”genre”. Seriously where are you getting the money to buy the gigantic quantities of high grade to convince your drooling brain that this is music. Dub step is music without the 'soul'. This stuff smashes through EMF's unbelievable and bashes head first into CMC music company in its no-content content. Korn is just desperately looking for a new fan base that hasn’t turned on them. This is completey transparent when the album directly before it was Korn's self-claimed return to true form. Listen up old Korn fans John isnt like you anymore. Hes a victum turned bully just like name callers in his songs.
Jon, we need to talk. We need to let this end. It's time. dont yell jon please. you know you havent been able to pull that off in a long time now.
We had a lot of great times at first, but we were kids then. We’ve changed. You've changed. We both aren’t invested in it anymore. We'll still remember the good times, after all you were my first. And to be honest there's someone else who’s giving me more than you could ever do for me. I mean look at you. You’ve changed so much I don’t even recognize you anymore. It's obvious you’ve been looking for other things too. While I don’t agree with your new perversions I must let you go to make your own path.
I'll leave you alone.
I’m just a "faggot" anyway.
after thought: so i went and lkistened to all there CDs. just to show im not just spitting flame here are some of my favs
songs that rock
1. father 2. predictable 3.Kill Yuo 4.Devine 5.Beg 4 Me 6.Counting 7. Trash 8.good god 9.Its on and i could go on
Life is a Lemon (and I frackin love this song for some reason)
Written by Kevin Richards
It’s corny as hell. It's long (I'm talking Pink Floyd on mescaline looooong), repetitive and… ugh! I find myself listening to it again and again. I feel like Guy Pearce from Memento trying to trace back my steps and remember how I ended up listening to this song again.
Then it goes dark....and I suddenly find myself listening to it again.
This enigma of a song is “life is a lemon (and I want my money back)” by rock legend and cheeseburger enthusiast, Meatloaf. Even the title warns you of the potential for cringe-worthy lyrics. Corniness comes mainly (for me) when the song gets a little to specific in it metaphors.
To give you an idea, here is a stanza from the song:
“(Desperation)…Leaves a stain on all your clothes and no detergent get it out”
-Meatloaf “Life is a Lemon”
I think it's that line that makes me check the room to insure no one sees me listening to it. I mean I'm not thinking, 'yeah desperation is dirty', I'm thinking “a stain that bad? it's too bad he doesn’t know my grandma, she's got something to get it out”. Getting stains out does not invoke a feeling of desperation, it invokes thoughts about manual chores. The only hint of desperation I feel from laundry is trying to find a place that’s willing to lessen their vice grip on their precious quarters.
Yet I keep listening. I bang my head at the appropriate parts and thoroughly get into the song.
Now to be fair there are some parts that I find powerful.
Chorus: "what about school”
The loaf: “it’s a pack of useless lies!!”
Chorus: “what about your job”
The Loaf: “it’s a crock and then you die”
This whole section of the song is pretty relate-able. It's hard to imagine any person who hasn't felt frustration to the point of giving up or everything around them is pointless.
Maybe it’s possible I’ve become a cynical ass and lost sight of purely enjoying music on that basic level. Sometimes I feel like that friend we all have, you know the one who can’t just watch a movie without pointing out every minor problem (me). Does it have to be perfect? Would perfect even be enjoyable?
HELL NO! Perfect is mechanical and for lack of a better term, soulless. You think Otis Redding's “Sitting at the Dock of the Bay” would have been so impactful if someone said “your voice needs to be more constant, it’s too shaky”?
On a personal level I used to make what I would label music in a pseudo-industrial style. After listening to much of what I had worked legitimately hard on, I realized I had no pathos or organic “imperfections” in my music. Methodical, logical rhythm and perfect pitch (I'm not saying I do, because I definitely don't) does not make a good song.
Even a white and frankly, in perspective of the world, a fairly privileged white boy like me can feel like Otis and how powerless he feels, because it sounds like he’s barely keeping it together. Like he could cry, but if know one sees or cares, there’s no point, so I’m just going to watch the world pass by, the ships are in a state of working towards a goal, and he is willing but unable.
So what do I conclude from this? Well I could try to make sense of it, but frankly I think I'll just go listen to "life is a lemon" while I still have my place to myself. :)

One of the most amazing things about listening to music is our mind's ability to interpret the song as it sees fit. Your brain seeks logic and truth, ultimately shaping what you believe is the meaning. Sadly, we live in a society whose music industry is more concerned about telling you how much bigger their dick is then yours and maximizing the amount of alcohol they can pass around (seriously you can only get so drunk I don’t care how much money you shove up your ass) and I’m not just talking about rap. Rock bands seem to think every lot lizard they pick up at a bar that doesn’t call them back justifies a song about bleeding hearts and 12 shades of absolute suck. However, it's important to remember that there are still thoughtful, metaphoric lyrics out there. People might say “its too vague", "I don’t know what he’s trying to say", "I just like the beat”, but I think it is that very vagueness that makes them amazing. They're not trying to spoon-feed you an idea, but rather trying to get your pathetic, public school brain to reach out and find an original thought. With that said, this show is about thought-provoking songs and what I think their meanings are. I'm not just picking my favorite songs but the songs I personally have contemplated and found thought-provoking.
Episode intro:
For the very first episode I thought I'd cover a song by a band which might possibly be the first band I heard where I can distinctly remember thinking “I got to know THEM lyrics”: "Prison Sex" by Tool. On the surface you might think this is a fairly straight-forward song. It's all in the title. But if we think of prison as a metaphor for inescapable fate, such as the abused becoming the abusive, the song takes on a much more philosophical meaning than its raw, raunchy lyrics may portray. Class is out and as adults we should be able to hear taboo words without looking like we just received a colonoscopy. Fair warning though, you will need your big boy eyes for this one.
Disclaimer:
Obviously I’m making some conclusions on the meaning of the song in comparison with today’s analyses that are speculative at best. My intentions are not to arrogantly assume to know the exact meaning or intention of the band, but to simply explain what I PERSONALLY infer from the lyrics themselves and open up the conversation to other people’s experiences and takes on it. None of this is in stone. Call it an excuse to step out of the tiny box we live in to stretch my legs. Indulge me.

“Prison Sex”, Tool
It took so long to remember just what happened. I was so young and vestal then, you know it hurt me, but I'm breathing so I guess I'm still alive even if signs seem to tell me otherwise. I've got my hands bound and my head down and my eyes closed, half-closed, wide open.
The first stanza represents the initial abusive trauma to the victim. It’s such a traumatic event that the victim's own consciousness has completely buried the memory. However, the memory is not gone, but merely given to the subconscious. He thinks to himself, "I’m alive, so I survived," unaware of the seedling implanted in is subconscious.
Do unto others, what has been done to me, Do unto others, what has been done to you?
This is obviously the golden rule, but in reverse. The idea of "treat others how you want to be treated" has been perverted into a self-justifying hatred for anything that reminds the victim of who he was. Therefore, this reminds him of the abuse and accesses the same visceral area of the mind. He then projects the abusive treatment he received onto others. The fact this is stated as a question is the denial that the action is even negative.
Fever Tangent: This seemingly positive rule is easily turned from virtue to destruction. I find that this can be done with many principles like
charity = taxes
murder = military orders
theft = banking fees.
But I diiiIIIIIGGGGGREEEESSSSSSSS!!!!1! (off Subject)
I'm treading water, I need to sleep a while. My lamb and martyr, you look so precious. Won't you come on up closer, close enough so I can smell you. I need you to feel this, I can't stand to burn too long. Release in sodomy. Oh, for one sweet moment I am whole.
Self control breaks down to the point of unrest. The seedling grows from victim to abuser. In using the terms lamb and martyr, he sees the new victim as a salvation, but only on an animalistic level, as apparent by him expressing the need to smell his victim. There is no rational response, only an irrational misfire in the mind. The need is on the same level as eating and just as impossible to control. Burning not only suggests a fiery desire, but also a sense of living hell. That might be a stretch though, even salmon would face palm.
In accessing the same visceral area of the mind, there is now a strong connection between abuse and emotion. Regardless if the emotion is healthy or self-destructive, he's glad just to feel anything because at least he feels alive, rather than contained by bottling up his painful memory, or at this point, hard-wired instinct on a basic level.
Do unto you now, what has been done to me, Do unto you now, what has been done?
You're breathing so I guess you're still alive even if signs seem to tell me otherwise. Won't you come on a bit closer, close enough so I can smell you. I need you to feel this. I need this to make me whole. Release in sodomy. For I am your witness and blood and flesh can be trusted.(X2) And only this one holy medium brings me peace of mind.
The victim finds his own victim almost identical to his former, undamaged innocence. He does not understand the reason behind this animalistic behavior to abuse, because there is no rational one to be found. The reason is purely emotional and out of his control since it was left to the subconscious.
Got your hands bound, your head down, your eyes closed. You look so precious now.
( Show me something Thought I could make it end Thought I could wash the stains away Thought I could break the circle if I Slipped right into your skin So sweet was your surrender We have become one I have become my terror And you my precious lamb and martyr.) *
I have found some kind of temporary sanity in this shit, blood, and cum on my hands.
Get past the ignorant stigma about taboo words. There are letters that form words that all adults should be able to hear without their brains exploding. They are there for shock value, or a better term would be pathos, invoking an emotional response to remind the listener of the song of their own futile attempts at correcting negative behavior that has been linked in the brain since early development. This song is not just about rape, but about nurtured negative behaviors in general. Its superficial subject of rape is to provoke a raw, sickening response from the listener. It's there to make you uncomfortable about your own hard-wired LEARNED negative behaviors. Rape is a horrific act and a universally despised behavior. I can only attempt to contemplate its true impact on a person. It's the most definitive unacceptable behavior.
There is another interesting side to this. The original victim becomes fully aware of his completely destructive behavior. There’s even a sense of desperation in curing himself, but a cellmate in a prison cannot escape own mind. Same as an addict whose behavior defies all reasonable logic. While you look on the outside with bewilderment, he is just as confused about it as you are.
I've...come...round...full circle. My lamb and martyr, this will be over, soon. You look so precious.(X4) You look so precious, now, You look so precious...
Manor was quoted in 1993 before performing prison sex in Canada "This song is about recognizing, identifying, the cycle of abuse within yourself. That's the first step of the process: realization; identifying. The next step is to work through it. But this song is about the first step in the process, which is recognizing."
It is also interesting to note that the music video caused some controversy being removed from MTVs music video library due to “suggestive child abuse”. Now I know what your thinking…. MTV played music! Yeah weird huh
This song not only speaks on the cycle of abuse in aggressive “in your face” reality, but also puts the singer in the shoes of the victim-turned-abuser in a horrifyingly explicit way, as a lot of Tool's music does (Sober, Stink Fist, Opiate, etc.) Prison Sex can be found on Undertow, Tool's debut album, which I highly recommend. Fuck cherry-pickin songs from itunes. Be a real man and get the album. I hope you found this interesting.
Personal note: Please accept my humble attempt at writing my first script. I realize I’m about as rusty a writer as "Bird-demic" is considered “Ernest”. It's something I’ve been procrastinating and spewing cliché pathetic phrases like “I should write", "I used to write you know” to whoever wants to know aka no-fucking-buddy. I’m hoping to get better with practice. Let me know what you think. Suggestions and criticism welcome.
